ANASTASIYA TARASENKO: The Sum of Our Parts
January 11 - March 28, 2020

Steven Zevitas Gallery is pleased to present Anastasiya Tarasenko’s first solo exhibition, The Sum of Our Parts. The exhibition will run from January 11 – February 29, 2020 with a reception on Friday, February 7 from 5:30 – 8:00 PM.

Drawing from a range of art historical sources – Indian miniature painting, Hieronymus Bosch and Albrecht Durer, among them – Tarasenko’s The Sum of Our Parts offers a biting critique of the inherent dichotomies within human moral, social, carnal, and intellectual structures. Her meticulously crafted work is an investigation of the man-made set of spectrums in which we attempt, often ineffectually, to organize ourselves among the chaos of human existence. Through her willingness to embrace art history, Tarasenko suggests that, at their root, the core issues we all face in our lives are not unique to a given time or place and, in fact, are deeply embedded in our very nature - joy cannot exist without pain and innocence cannot exist without perversion.

Tarasenko’s choice of media is ideally calibrated to the content of her work. Using copper panels as a support allows her to conjure a range of visual effects and to work with oils in a highly specific manner. Her paintings teem with visual information and, in works such as You Can’t Teach Old Dogs New Tricks, contain myriad moments that vie for the viewer’s attention. Tarasenko’s formal decisions, however, lend her work a visual clarity that allows for these complex narratives to coalesce.
