MARK SHEINKMAN: New Works on Paper
October 5 – November 17, 2018

Steven Zevitas Gallery is pleased to present New Works on Paper, an exhibition of new oil on paper works by New York artist Mark Sheinkman. This is the artist’s fourth solo show with the gallery.

Since emerging in the late 1980s. Sheinkman’s artistic practice has largely been dedicated to an exploration of how line can render meaning. Working primarily in black and white, his work has become increasingly complex over the past three decades, both in terms of pictorial language and visual effect. For the first time in 18 years, Sheinkman has allowed color to enter his practice, the earliest results of which are presented in this exhibition. The works presented are of similar scale as to allow ultimate freedom in exploration of color, form, energy, and atmospheric space. Sheinkman’s hand is increasingly present, utilizing a flux of additive and reductive techniques, keeping constant consideration and engagement in the process of painting.

Sheinkman was born in New York in 1963 and received a B.A. from Princeton University. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others. He has exhibited regularly in the United States and abroad, including solo exhibitions at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Rapids, Michigan; and the Museum Gegenstandsfreier Kunst, Otterndorf, Germany.
